i wish i could remember the name of this cafe... deanna and i broke off from the group for dinner one night... we were headed for the aptly named biocompany grocery store, near hackescher markt, for some healthy snacks, but she had to go to the bathroom. we passed a bar, and though the host seemed eager to talk to us, he wouldn't let us use the bathroom for less than .50. (even when i explained that it was 'that time of the month for my friend.') deanna explained that she would never pay for her bodily functions and suggested we go elsewhere... and we found this gem. there was one woman working the cafe and one woman eating. the woman working didn't speak any english, but was kind enough to let us use the bathroom. when we tried to ask why it was women only, she gave us a pamphlet... it was a cafe run entirely by women for women... most of whom were battling to be clear of substance abuse problems and function cleanly in the world. we were so moved/excited by the mission, that we stayed to eat/support. luckily we knew the words to explain gluten and lactose free (for deanna) and vegan (for me).
overall it was a good meal, but the best part was getting to know deanna... on a trip where i felt like the odd one out much of the time (more on that later), she was definitely a ray of sunshine. we shared the same yogic and spiritual philosophies... the same taste in food (heh)... and after our meal we did a yoga class together!
little love lives in belgium right now, but is moving to nyc, sept 1 and i can't wait to be reunited!
