klub7 in brooklyn.

yesterday we went to williams & bailey (grand between lorimer and union) to watch the champions league final and stumbled upon a klub7 mural. klub7 is a totally awesome berlin based collective that gets busy making art around the world. right now they are diggin' brooklyn, and i am pretty obsessed with them... check out their blog.

green inspired art.

last week i joined the fishs eddy team to compete in the green inspired art competition at the museum of art and design. the event was put on by the museum, and this great organization, materials for the arts, that has a warehouse full of art supplies in long island city, that they open to non-profit art organizations and schools to shop from for free.

the premise of the competition was simple. we (us, two teams from tekserve, and two teams from goldman sachs) were given a little over 2 hours, a base, and green art materials that we had to assemble into something with an environmental theme. it was glorified arts and crafts and it was a glorious time. our piece focused mainly on deforestation and it was definitely the most detailed of the bunch (us, the team of creatives)...

anyway. good times. and the museum is fantastic too. go!

whitney biennial gala opening.

the big egg hunt.

the big egg hunt is a charity fundraising campaign in aid of action for children and elephant family, sponsored by faberge. 200+ artists, celebrities, and designers created/painted metre high fiberglass eggs scattered across selected london locations. the hunt started feb 21st and londoners have 40 days to locate the various eggs around the city. while i was there, 2 eggs went missing, but i think they have since been found.

tate modern.

i ran into this installation by do hu suh at the tate. it's a replication of a stairway in his nyc apartment.

banksy tesco flag.

this banksy piece is outside a tesco next to my friend's apartment in islington. it used to look like below (photo credit jeeheon, flickr)... a plastic protective sheath was put over it to protect it from vandalism, but someone squeezed a spray can nozzle through an open bit at the top and ruined it anyway. shame.

i had the pleasure of spending yesterday afternoon with becky and her husband colin, who is a figurative sculptor. their apartment faces the river, has beautiful light, and is also home to several of his pieces. adolescence (above) was my favourite.

will kurtz: extra f***ing ordinary.

checked out will kurtz's debut at mike weiss gallery. i generally visit galleries at low traffic times so as to really see the work. this might be the rare exception where everything worked better with more people. the audience/sculpture interaction was seamless and awesome...

from the press release: Utilizing the observing eye of a curious urban voyeur, Kurtz spends large portions of his days combing the streets of New York for his subjects which are later transformed into sincere and amusing life-size sculptures. It is not the subjects' aesthetic appeal that draws Kurtz as much as their essence and strong representation of the multitude of prototypes that typify New York City...
